✨Forgiveness meaning

1. Stop feeling anger towards someone or continue to blame them

2. Stop feeling angry about something

3. To not feel resentment

✨Culture’s 5 common “beliefs” of the meaning of forgiveness

1. Forgiveness depends on situation

2. Some people can forgive easier than others

3. Trauma or abuse makes forgiveness feel like a burden to the one who has endured the abuse or trauma. (It does feel like a burden to be the one to forgive when you know the other person isn’t sorry for what they’ve done or continue to do.)

4. Forgiveness is transactional- that it implies reconciliation. (Spoiler alert - just because you forgive it does not mean reconciliation)

5. Some things are just unforgivable

✨The hardest thing that we will ever do is show grace to someone who will never be sorry. And that’s what makes us like Jesus when we show that kind of grace.

✨Forgiveness is not an unfair gift to the offender but a process through which God provides a way for the offended to heal.

✨Pray and ask for God’s help in forgiving. It can’t be done alone but through God’s help.

✨Ask God to help you pray for those who have hurt you. You don’t have to forgive or pray for those people in your own strength.

✨And seek wise counsel when you’re healing and forgiving

✨There is a difference in forgiveness & reconciliation/ full reconciliation. We are called as believers to forgive. Just because you forgive, does’t mean you forget the actions or wrong doings someone has done to hurt you or is continuing to do to harm you. Just because you forgive doesn’t mean you’ll stop aching for justice. Just because you forgive doesn’t mean that you don’t set healthy boundaries. And just because you forgive doesn’t mean that you will experience full reconciliation or restoration. BUT when you forgive YOU will experience healing.
